Dos clavadistas mexicanos cumplirán su sueño de competir en Juegos Olímpicos durante Paris 2024, aunque para ello tendrán que representar a República Dominicana y no a México, se trata de Victoria Garza y Jonathan Ruvalcaba.
Victoria Garza, clavadista originaria de Coahuila, es una de las deportistas que representará a República Dominicana. La atleta comenzó los trámites para naturalizarse como ciudadana dominicana en 2021, después de que la Federación Mexicana de Natación le negara los recursos para asistir a los Juegos Panamericanos Junior en Cali, Colombia.
“En algunas ocasiones era favoritismo, a algunas personas les daban más proyección, a mí me faltaba eso, que no me proyectaban, no me daban ese empuje que a otros atletas”, comentó Garza, quien ganó la medalla de plata general en 400 metros. “Para que no pasara en un futuro ese tipo de situaciones, preferí optar por la propuesta que me hizo República Dominicana”, añadió, en entrevista para N+.
Aunque en México Victoria contaba con una beca para sus entrenamientos, en República Dominicana recibió los apoyos necesarios para asistir a competencias internacionales, esenciales para su preparación. “Me dijeron que iba a ir a eventos internacionales, como mundiales, centroamericanos, entre otras competencias”, afirmó Garza.
Junto a Victoria, el clavadista Jonathan Ruvalcaba también representará a República Dominicana en París 2024.
El clavadista que fue medallista panamericano y finalista mundial representando a México, decidió cambiar de país, atraído por las oportunidades y el encanto del Caribe.
En enero de 2023, la Comisión Nacional de Cultura Física y Deporte (Conade) suspendió los apoyos, argumentando que estas disciplinas carecen de regulación en el país.
Actualmente, cerca de 40 atletas y entrenadores tienen procesos legales en curso para recuperar las becas, pero solo el equipo de nado sincronizado ha logrado restablecer los apoyos.
La Conade sostiene que los recursos para competencias internacionales son responsabilidad de la Federación Mexicana de Natación, la cual está actualmente inhabilitada.
